Evaluations

Evaluations

The most important step in diagnosing and treating neurological diseases is an accurate evaluation. To identify the cause of the symptoms, the patient’s history, neurological examination, MRI scans and other necessary tests are assessed together.

Detailed evaluations are carried out to confirm the diagnosis, determine disease activity and create an appropriate follow-up plan in neuroimmunological diseases — Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in particular — migraine and other headaches, Alzheimer’s disease and memory complaints, dizziness and other neurological conditions. When needed, existing diagnoses and treatments can also be reviewed through a second opinion.

Why Is a Neurological Evaluation Important?

Similar symptoms can be signs of different neurological diseases. Dizziness, for example, may stem from an inner-ear problem, migraine or a condition related to brain circulation, while numbness can have many causes ranging from nerve entrapment to MS. The first step towards the right treatment is therefore a systematic evaluation of the symptoms.

During the evaluation, the patient’s history, neurological examination findings, imaging and electrophysiological tests such as MRI and EEG, and laboratory results are interpreted as a whole. In patients who already have a diagnosis, the aim is to confirm it, determine disease activity and review how well the current treatment is working.

Areas of Evaluation

Before Your Evaluation

The Evaluation Process

  1. Initial information and booking: When you book, we take brief information about your symptoms and the tests you have.
  2. Examination: A detailed history is taken and a thorough neurological examination is performed.
  3. Interpretation of tests: Existing MRI, EEG and laboratory results are reviewed, and any missing tests are planned.
  4. Outcome and roadmap: The results are shared with you, and the treatment and follow-up plan is created together.

Frequently Asked Questions

What documents should I bring for an evaluation?

Previous MRI and CT scans and reports, EEG, EMG and blood test results, a list of your medications and any discharge summaries help make the evaluation faster and more complete.

What is an MRI evaluation?

An MRI evaluation is the interpretation of brain or spinal cord MRI scans together with the patient’s clinical findings. It plays an important role, especially in MS follow-up, in identifying new lesions and disease activity. See MS MRI evaluation for details.

Who is a second-opinion evaluation suitable for?

A second opinion can be helpful for patients who want to be sure of their diagnosis, re-evaluate whether their current treatment is appropriate or learn about other treatment options. See MS Second Opinion.
