About | Prof. Dr. Emin Özcan

Prof. Dr. Emin Özcan is a professor of neurology working in neuroimmunological diseases, particularly Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

Prof. Dr. Emin Özcan – Neurologist

A Neurologist Experienced in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Neuroimmunological Diseases

Throughout my neurology practice I have focused on the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of Multiple Sclerosis (MS), neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), MOG antibody-associated disease and other neuroimmunological diseases.

In a career of nearly twenty years I have evaluated thousands of neurological patients. While serving as a faculty member at universities, I have also been actively involved in the long-term follow-up of MS patients in particular.

Today, accurate diagnosis, up-to-date treatment options and individualised follow-up are at the heart of my clinical practice.

Academic Journey

I was born in Kahramanmaraş in 1980.

After completing my medical degree at Istanbul University, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, I did my neurology residency at the 3rd Neurology Clinic of Bakırköy Mental and Neurological Diseases Hospital.

During my residency I became particularly interested in neuroimmunology, the field that studies the effects of the immune system on the nervous system. Over time this interest became the foundation of my professional work.

After completing my compulsory service at Erzurum Oltu State Hospital, I began my academic career.

I served as a faculty member, in turn, at:

  • Bezmialem Vakıf University
  • Biruni University
  • Yeni Yüzyıl University Gaziosmanpaşa Hospital
  • Yeditepe University

I was awarded the title of Professor in November 2023.

Since 2024 I have been seeing patients at my private clinic in Istanbul.

Why Did MS Become My Special Interest?

Multiple Sclerosis is not just a neurological disease.

From the moment of diagnosis, it is a long journey that can affect a person’s education, career, family life and plans for the future.

That is why I believe MS follow-up is not only about MRI scans or laboratory results.

Every patient’s disease course is different.

I believe treatment decisions should take into account the patient’s life plans, expectations and clinical characteristics.

This approach has been the foundation of my clinical practice for many years.

International Experience

In 2008 I worked as an observer researcher at McGill University in Canada.

During this time I had the opportunity to work on and observe:

  • Flow cytometry
  • Neuronal cell cultures
  • Neuroimmunological research
  • MS clinic practice

I believe the experience I gained at international centres has contributed greatly to the way I follow up my patients today.

Scientific Work

Throughout my career I have been a researcher and author in many scientific studies published in national and international peer-reviewed journals.

My scientific work focuses mainly on:

  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • Neuroimmunology
  • Demyelinating diseases
  • Brain imaging methods
  • Clinical neurology

Communication Alongside Science

Neurological diseases often progress with uncertainty.

That is why I care not only about my patients’ test results but also about the questions they have along the way.

During the consultation I try to use language that is as clear as possible and to explain diagnosis and treatment options in detail.

Because I believe the first step to the right treatment is the right communication.

Areas of Interest

  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • Neuromyelitis Optica (NMOSD)
  • MOG Antibody-Associated Disease
  • Neuroimmunological Diseases
  • Headache and Migraine
  • Dizziness
  • Epilepsy
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Alzheimer’s and Dementia
  • Peripheral Neuropathies
  • Neuropsychological Assessment

Scientific Societies I Belong To

I believe professional development is a continuous process, so I closely follow national and international scientific meetings.

I am an active member of:

  • Turkish Neurological Society
  • Turkish Neurological Society MS Study Group
  • Turkish Neurological Society Neuroimmunology Study Group

My Approach to Patients and Treatment

I believe that evaluating neurological diseases requires considering not only test results but also the patient’s life history, clinical findings and long-term follow-up data together.

In the consultation my aim is to:

  • Identify the cause of the disease accurately,
  • Avoid unnecessary tests,
  • Plan treatment in the light of current scientific evidence,
  • Inform patients and their families about the process in detail,
  • Be a reliable companion throughout long-term follow-up.

I believe that, especially in the many years of follow-up of MS patients, doctor–patient communication is an inseparable part of treatment.
